Jarryd Hayne has been sentenced to five years and nine months jail, with a non-parole period of three years and eight months, for the sexual a sault of a woman in Newcastle, Australia, in September 2018.

The former NRL star and NFL player was taken into custody following the sentencing hearing at Bob Uecker Jersey Newcastle District Court on Thursday.

Facing a maximum sentence of 14 years prison, Judge Helen Syme said she believed Hayne was aware the woman wasn't consenting and went ahead anyway.
