Manual lymph drainage (MLD) is a form of massage technique that helps facilitate the movement of lymph fluid/ swollen lymph nodes around the body. This gentle massage helps remove waste products and toxins from the body tissue, which is especially crucial for patients with swollen lymph nodes and Lymphatic diseases, including but not limited to;

The lymphatic system consists of tissues, vessels, and organs that work together to transport a colourless, watery substance called lymph back into the circulatory system or known as the bloodstream.

It’s important to note, fluid that drains from cells and tissues (and that is not reabsorbed into the capillaries) becomes lymphatic fluid, along with proteins, minerals, fats, nutrients, damaged cells, cancer cells and foreign invaders (bacteria). Hence health conditions such as Lymphedema, fibromyalgia, and other health conditions can be managed by Manual lymph drainage (MLD) as it stimulates healthy blood circulation. MLD, is a smooth, light, skin-stretching massage that helps promote the movement of lymphatic fluid out of swollen limbs. It focuses on the lymph vessels to promote the flow of healthy lymphatic fluid.

In order to reroute stagnant lymphatic fluid, stimulation of lymph nodes and rhythmic contractions of lymphatics is intended to enhance their activity.
MLD consists of four strokes: stationary circles, scoop technique, pump technique, and rotary technique.
When combined with other elements of CDT (Complete Decongestive Therapy), it has optimal results as a preventative treatment and a postoperative rehabilitation treatment.
MLD increases blood flow in both deep and superficial veins. MLD can also be helpful in cases such as post-traumatic and post-surgical edema, and in the treatment of palliative conditions, as well as lymphedema.
