FIFA dissatisfied with EA's exclusive IP: FIFA brand should not only be owned by one company
According to foreign media Eurogamer, FIFA has issued a statement insisting that football games and its e-sports should not be "controlled and have all rights" by only one party - which is an unmistakable point to EA. FIFA also added that this will help "maximise all future opportunities." They also reiterated their commitment to running esports competitions under the FIFA brand.
The announcement comes at a critical time for EA and FIFA. EA's current licensing deal expires after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and New York Times sources say talks have stalled. According to reports, FIFA hopes to receive more than double the current share from EA (over $1 billion over four years), while also limiting EA's rights to continue making games. Meanwhile, EA is considering a name change for its soccer game series. Additionally, EA is also exploring new game concepts such as arena matches, blockchain, and even interacting with real-world ball games.
According to the New York Times, the decision is expected to be made by the end of 2021, and EA is hedging the risk by registering the "EA Sports FC" trademark. EA and FIFA declined to comment on the talks.
