The lesser form of Hajj, Umrah pilgrimage is also referred to as ‘Minor Pilgrimage’. Though umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage undertaken by a Muslim in the sunnah of the Holy Prophet (SAWW), it holds similar rewards to hajj. That’s why millions travel for it throughout the year with their cheap hajj packages 2022.
Linguistically, Umrah itself means a ‘pilgrimage to Makkah’ but it is not obligatory for any Muslim to offer it. Rather, umrah remains a sunnah of our Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) but its significance is no less than that of Hajj.
Here’s a brief description of the significant rites of minor pilgrimage.

1.Ihram.
Ihram is the initial rite of Umrah pilgrimage. It is the concept of entering a sacred state of absolute physical purity. Assuming Ihram is obligatory for every pilgrim whether male or female, otherwise the pilgrimage is invalid.
Assuming ihram consists of physically cleaning oneself and then wearing the designated ihram clothes. For men, it consists of two sheets of simple white cloth; one for covering the lower half of the body and the other one for covering the upper half. On the other hand, women can wear anything they desire for their Ihram but simple and modest clothing.
The state of Ihram must be assumed by a pilgrim before the Meeqat boundary gets crossed. Additionally, when a person assumes Ihram certain prohibitions are imposed on him/her. So, it is significantly essential to abide by those rules for completing a successful pilgrimage. These prohibitions prominently include hunting, physical intimacy with the spouse, shaving/trimming of the hair, wearing fragrance, etc.

2.Tawaf.
Tawaf is the concept of seven circumambulations around the Holy Kaabah present in Masjid-al-Haram by the pilgrims. The Tawaf must be observed in an anti-clockwise direction i.e., keeping Kaabah on the left-hand side.
Tawaf of Holy Kaabah is among the principal rites of Umrah with each of these seven rounds starting as well as ending at the place of Hajar-al-Aswad (the Black Stone).
Tawaf is an act that represents the complete devotion of the pilgrims for spiritually connecting with Allah Almighty and supplicating to him. For this very reason, the Tawaf around holy Kaabah never ever stops!

3.Sayee.
Sayee means the ritualistic walking done across the hills of Safah and Marwah for seven rounds. These hills are present within the boundaries of Masjid-al-Haram.
While performing the Sayee ritual, pilgrims must seek mercy and blessings from Allah Almighty by reciting specific prayers.
It’s a recommended act to complete Sayee on foot because it symbolizes the ongoing struggle but if there’s a dire need for a wheelchair, it’s permissible to use it under righteous conditions.

4.Tahallul.
Tahallul is the final rite of the minor pilgrimage. For which, men must shave their heads (trimming is also allowed) while women are only allowed to cut a fingertip’s length of their hair.
Upon the performance of Tahallul, the pilgrims are exempted from all the prohibitions of Ihram and their Umrah pilgrimage is complete.
These are the significant rites of Minor pilgrimage.
