Basant Panchmi is observed on the fifth day (Panchami Tithi) of the Hindu month Magh's bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha). Vasant Ritu (the spring season) begins in India on this day. On this day, Saraswati Puja is also done. When the Panchami Tithi prevails during the first half of the day, between sunrise and midday, the festival is held.

Vasant Panchami is observed on the second day if Panchmi Tithi begins after midday and lasts till the first half of the next day. Only if Panchami Tithi is not present in the first half of the first day at any point in time may the celebration be moved to the next day. Otherwise, the event will take place on the first day of the month. That is why, according to Panchang, Basant Panchami might also fall on the Chaturthi Tithi.

During the first half of the day, from sunrise to midday, Goddess Rati and Lord Kamdev are worshipped in 16 different ways (Shodhashopchar Puja).

They also demand that sluggishness, apathy, and ignorance be banished. Many astrologers consider Vasant Panchami to be a 'Abhuja' day, which means it is auspicious for doing any beneficial deed throughout the day.
