In Diablo 2 Resurrected, if the player wants to make an Exile shield, the player needs to spell out the rune word "VexOhmIstDol" by adding Vex runes, Ohm runes, Ist runes, and Dol runes to the 4-hole Paladin shield. Runes must be added exactly in this order for rune words to work.

It should be noted that the shield must be a paladin shield, and players cannot use monarchs, guards, or aegis to make Exile. On normal difficulty, it is possible for the player to obtain a 4-hole paladin shield as early as the fourth act. If the player finds a normal Paladin shield in Act IV Normal, then the player can ask Lazuk to add slots to it, or use the recipe of the Horadic block to add slots.

Dol is the easiest rune to obtain, and players can plant it at the Hellforge of Nightmare or the Countess of Nightmare or Hell. Ist is more difficult to obtain. Unless the player has two spare Gul runes and a ruby, which can be combined into a Vex in the Horadric Cube, the player will rely on the random drop of the two on Hell difficulty. If the player somehow ends up with two spare Vex runes, the player can combine them with emeralds to make Ohm.

Due to its defense enhancement and resistance halo, Exile shield can ensure that the player's Paladin becomes an absolute tank.
