Cost Estimator - How Does It Work?

The most common service offered by a Cost Estimator Company is cost estimating. Cost estimation compares costs with what is technically possible to achieve the best value at the end of the project. An Estimator works with companies, project managers, and engineering firms to estimate costs for many different types of projects, including feasibility studies, design development, implementation, and maintenance or utility management. Some of the services offered by a Cost Estimator Company include project management, engineering, aerospace and power generation, construction estimating, and construction estimating services.

Many companies and individuals use a Cost Estimator Company to provide an estimate of their labor, material, and cost in order to negotiate prices on projects. The project manager can then use the estimate as a negotiating tool when seeking bids from various construction or utility companies for the job. The project manager can also obtain an estimate for a particular project so that he can plan ahead and make changes to the project to increase its likelihood of success. Cost Estimators usually meet with the project managers prior to the start of the work to obtain a verbal estimate. Once the estimate is provided, the EstimatorEstimator may contact the Project Manager for a more detailed explanation.

The cost estimations are normally more accurate if they come from a third-party source. There are companies that specialize in providing cost estimates for a variety of projects. The cost estimate from these companies is usually much less than what a typical individual would pay for an in-house construction estimating service. The cost estimation methodologies are based on a number of assumptions. One of the most common assumptions made in cost estimates is the level of expertise of the person or company providing the information.

What is the best way to estimate a project?

Most project managers receive cost estimates over the telephone, email, or writing. A lot of time may be spent on the phone talking with the various Estimators. Project managers normally have a variety of questions and will ask the EstimatorEstimator several times before accepting any estimates. If the estimates do not contain all of the necessary information, the Project Manager will have questions until all necessary information is received.

The best way to make sure that all information required is included in the cost estimates is for the Project Manager to contact each EstimatorEstimator directly and request that they send all relevant materials, photos, and other documentation to the Project Manager. This is the best way to ensure that all the required material is available and that it has been reviewed by all parties involved in the project. A Project Manager should also review the estimate several times to ensure that all the required steps have been completed.

What happens when the cost estimate is incorrect?

If estimates from multiple Estimators are different than the Project Manager expects, the Project Manager should make an effort to discuss the differences with each EstimatorEstimator and find out why the estimates are any different. Often, this is caused by the difference in the Estimator'sEstimator's perspective of the project and the difference between time frames or the number of items being measured.

Sometimes, there may be a big difference in the number of steps or time between measurements. In these cases, the Project Manager may want to request a quote from each EstimatorEstimator separately to see if the estimates are similar and therefore use the lowest estimate.

Estimators are usually experienced in providing Construction Estimating Services and in completing the necessary documentation. However, there are certain situations where additional assistance may be needed. For example, a low-cost estimate can often be derived by combining several estimates from different Estimators. Additional assistance may be required when the project contains unknown variables. Examples include complicated transportation operations and/or control systems. Therefore, it is advisable to contact more than one Estimator company to obtain a cost estimate for the project.

Conclusion:-

Cost Estimator estimates are provided after negotiations between the Project Manager and the estimator company. An Estimate will be provided once all parties involved in the project have reviewed the estimate and agreed upon it. The Estimator company is then paid by the Project Manager for their services. The Estimator company does not provide a final cost at the time of the agreement, but the Company will charge a fee for preparing and submitting an estimate.
