The bony bump that is present on the inner side of the ankle is known as medial malleolus. It is also known to be the largest bone segment that forms the ankle. There are three bone segments in the ankle that include medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, and posterior malleolus. Out of these three, the medial malleolus is the largest.

In this post, we are not going to talk about medial malleolus, but our focus will be on fractures occurring at this location. Medial malleolus fractures are known to be one of the most common fractures occurring in the ankle. Sometimes they could be serious enough to require surgery for the treatment and depending upon the severity the surgeon will decide whether Orthopaedic Trauma Implants will be required or not.

What is Medial Malleolus Fracture?

The crack or break occurring in the medial malleolus of the ankle is known as medial malleolus fracture. This type of fracture could either be isolated or associated with breaks in other bones as well. Most often, medial malleolus fractures occur as a compound injury. This means the fracture often occurs with a break in other bones of the ankle. In some cases, injury to the ligament of the leg may also be noticed.

Hairline fractures may also be seen in the medial malleolus.

Medial malleolus fractures are known to be very hard to detect. One of the key things to be noticed about this type of fracture is that it is more common in women than men.

Children aged around 11 to 12 years are also prone to getting ankle fractures. Besides this, athletes also have the highest chances of getting their medial malleolus fracture.

What Are the Causes of Medial Malleolus Fracture?

Falls and sudden twisting of the ankle while playing or walking are the commonest causes of ankle fractures involving the medial malleolus. They could also occur due to automobile accidents and sports injuries. Certain health conditions like osteoporosis and the ones that result in the weakening of bones may also be the cause of medial malleolus fractures.

What Are the Symptoms of Medial Malleolus Fractures?

Some of the common symptoms associated with the condition include:

  • Immediate intense pain
  • Swelling around the ankle
  • Difficulty in using the injured ankle
  • Inability to bear even a small amount of weight on the injured ankle
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Deformity of the affected ankle
  • Bruising

How Medial Malleolus Fracture is Diagnosed?

Physical examination is often the first step to diagnose medial malleolus fracture. Here, the doctor will look for deformity, swelling, and other visible symptoms. The physical examination will be followed by an x-ray examination to identify whether it is a fracture, break, or any other condition.

How Medial Malleolus Fracture is Treated?

Emergency treatment must be considered in severe cases, especially when there is a wound or an open injury. On the other hand, if an open wound is not there but a fracture of the ankle is suspected, the doctor may apply a splint or a cast depending upon the severity.

In case of serious dislocations and internal damage, surgery may be preferred to avoid worsening the condition. Besides this, antibiotics may also be given to prevent infection. Open reduction and internal fixation procedures may require Orthopedic Implant Plates, wires, and rods for the stabilization of fractured bones.

Mild and moderate cases of the condition can be fixed without surgery, and that involves the use of a splint, a cast, or a fracture brace.
