Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 161-170

Chapter 25: From what refuge is to be sought when in salat.

Amr al-Naqid and Zuhair ibn Harb narrated to me: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us: My father narrated to us, on the authority of Salih, on the authority of Ibn Shihab: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that Aishah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, seeking refuge in his prayer from the trial of the Antichrist. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 161)

Nasr ibn Ali al-Jahdhami, Ibn Numayr, Abu Kurayb, and Zuhayr ibn Harb all narrated to us on the authority of Wakee’ - Abu Kurayb said: Wakee’ narrated to us - Al-Awza’i narrated to us, on the authority of Hassan ibn Atiyyah, on the authority of Muhammad ibn Abi Aishah, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, and on the authority of Yahya ibn Abi Katheer, on the authority of Abu Salamah, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: And he said, “When one of you recites the Shahada, let him seek refuge in God from four things: ‘O God, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Antichrist.’” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 162)

Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq told me, Abu al-Yaman told us, Shu`ayb told us, on the authority of al-Zuhri, who said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr told me that Aishah, the wife of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, told him that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to supplicate in prayer: “O God, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Antichrist, and I seek refuge in You from…” The trial of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.” She said: Someone said to him: How often do you seek refuge from debt, O Messenger of Allah? He said: “When a man is in debt, he speaks and lies, and makes a promise and breaks it.” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 163)

Abu Huraira reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When any one of you completes the last tashahhud. he should seek refuge with Allah from four (trials). I.e. from the torment of Hell, from the torment of grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the mischief of Masih at-Dajjal (Antichrist). This hadith has been narrated by al-Auza'i with the same chain of transmitters but with these words:" When any one of you completes the tashahhud" and he made no mention of the words" the last". (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 164)

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, Ibn Abi Udayy narrated to us, on the authority of Hisham, on the authority of Yahya, on the authority of Abu Salamah, that he heard Abu Hurayrah say: The Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, the punishment of the Fire, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the Antichrist.” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 165)

Muhammad ibn ‘Abbad narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, on the authority of ‘Amr, on the authority of Tawus, who said: I heard Abu Hurairah say: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of Allah. Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave. Seek refuge in Allah from the trial of the Antichrist. Seek refuge in Allah from the trial of life and death.” (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 166)

Muhammad ibn ‘Abbad narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, on the authority of Ibn Tawus, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, similarly. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 167)

Muhammad ibn ‘Abbad, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, and Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, on the authority of Abu al-Zinad, on the authority of al-A’raj, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, similarly. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 168)

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ja`far narrated to us, Shu`bah narrated to us, on the authority of Budayl, on the authority of `Abdullah ibn Shaqiq, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, on the authority of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, that he used to seek refuge from the torment of the grave, the torment of Hell, and the trial of the Antichrist. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 169)

Qutaybah ibn Sa`id narrated to us, on the authority of Malik ibn Anas - in what was recited to him - on the authority of Abu al-Zubayr, on the authority of Tawus, on the authority of Ibn `Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to teach them this supplication as he would teach them a surah from the Qur’an. He would say, “Say, ‘O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of…’” The Antichrist, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.” Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj said: It has reached me that Tawus said to his son: Did you recite this supplication in your prayer? He said: No. He said: Repeat your prayer, because Tawus narrated it from three or four people, or something like that. (Sahih Muslim Book 5 – Hadith 170)
