A growing number of companies are taking part in 2k22 mt the NBA 2K League. The NBA 2K League has increasingly caught the eye of sponsors as well. The 2K League reached 14 marketing partners this season. This is the most of any NBA 2K League season, which includes five new partnerships that include GameStop, Jostens, SAP and Tissot, and DoorDash as the official partner of the NBA 2K League Playoffs and Finals.

Esports can be a lucrative commercial opportunity because it has an engaged fan base. Donohue claims that the fan base is so passionate that brands are able to attach themselves to them. "Our average fan spends 30 hours per week, video games, and this is an incredibly passionate fans base."

Indeed Donohue puts the growth of the NBA 2K League in partners down to the combination of companies who recognize that esports are a growing industry and that rapid increase in the interest of fans. I believe that this was already happening, and the increased participation of fans only fuels the fire. I think it was having all the brands we spoke to about partnerships. They all realize they must be involved engaged in esports and are just trying to figure out how they can achieve it."

However, for businesses there is the risk of jumping into the esports industry, which is a new one, something former Golden State Warrior and prominent tech businessman Andre Iguodala once called "the Wild Wild West". For the NBA it was a risk that was worth taking. Donohue declares, "It's in 2K's DNA to be innovating." He further explains that NBA owners "realize the future , and this is going to continue to grow." Therefore, I believe there could have been more risk in not taking it and then actually doing it."

Some fear that esports are marginal ideas that only attract gamers who are hardcore, but with only a limited commercial appeal have been proven untrue. Forbes published in the year 2000 that worldwide revenues from esports could exceed $1.1bn in 2019.

Donohue explains that even over the past three years, three seasons in which I have been talking differ from how they were before the league began. As Warriors Assistant General Manager Kirk Lacob recently told me that esports are "absolutely becoming more mature".

Donohue explains the advantages of a league managed by the NBA office in regards to recruiting partners. "The advantage that comes with having the NBA 2K brand, is that we have amazing relationships with many of this partners, and we tend to hold their hands and guide them through eSports. We also help them understand how they can tap into eSports in order to build their brand."

The NBA 2K League offers companies another benefit: the game is simple to understand. "While the esports arena can be quite challenging for the average person, we're an extremely friendly sport where you don't need to play for fun to watch our games.
