BeMIS Personality Assessment
In order to complete this assessment, I underwent the personality assessment test myself. Being in the position of a client helped me to achieve some goals; I was able to apply empathy, evaluate the level of clients’ honesty while taking the test and understood the struggle that a client might face while fulfilling the requirements of the assessment. Due to the simplicity of the assessment, I was very attentive to make sure I did not miss any point. The aim of any client is to get help from the counselor. The only way to achieve this is by opening up. By use of the assessment, clients can tell their counselor who they are and how they represent their personalities, which is the aim of the assessment.
Personality Assessment in Diagnosis
Benefit
The Adjective Check List (ACL) provides a person’s description of him or herself. Different people show different personality traits, but it is only the specific individual that can explain the reason behind those of his or her own (Sugarman, 2014). Other people try to evaluate the expressed conduct, but their efforts can only be termed as speculating or assuming. When ACL is used, an individual has to choose adjectives that describe him or her accurately. The assessment, therefore, addresses what the client feels the problem is and not what other people say it is. The test achieves the objectives that counselors have when they try to understand their clients before any counseling session. At the end of the assessment, the client reveals his or her personality traits to the counselor, who will be able to frame the therapy according to the results.
Limitation
The major limitation of the assessment is that honesty of the respondent cannot be proven. While choosing the adjectives to use in describing him or herself, the client might not be willing to reveal his or her true nature and, therefore, the results of the assessment will not be accurate. The issue of bias plays a big role in the assessment (Bornstein, 2010). The factors that are behind the client seeking a counselor may play a big role in this assessment. Some of the clients are brought by family members and, therefore, they might not have reached the level of self-acceptance and awareness of having a problem. When this type of client is offered for assessment, he or she will not be honest and will try to portray themselves as appealing people.
Projective Assessment in Diagnosis
Benefit
Using projective assessment while giving a diagnosis is beneficial. It is deemed to achieve better results in comparison with other assessments. The assessment will reveal important information about the client that would not be revealed while using other methods. The results are accurate because they come directly from the client, and they represent an inner assessment of oneself (Czopp, 2012). The results of this assessment offer the best platform for remedy because they deal with what the individual thinks he or she is. Therefore, the results are beneficial to the successful establishing of the diagnosis because they offer an in-depth and accurate description of oneself hence there are no chances of misdiagnosis.
Limitation
Use of the results obtained from projective assessment to form a diagnosis is faced with the problem of lack of standardized ways of interpreting the results (Koch, Ortner, Eid, Caspers, & Schmitt, 2014). The obtained results may be interpreted differently by different counselors. The Adjective Check List lacks a result assessment and interpretation procedure hence creating room for diverse views that may lead to the counselor missing the problem (Sugarman, 2014). Even though the assessment might be administered in the best way and the necessary results would be obtained, the diagnosis made from the results might not be perfect as it will depend on the experience and knowledge of the counselor.
